A political commentator and researcher questioned the need for a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) given the profits corporations are already making in British Columbia when he spoke at a B.C. Federation of Labour convention in Prince George on Saturday.
Will McMartin, who writes for the Tyee, a left-wing online news magazine but has been affiliated with the Conservative, Social Credit and BC Reform parties, maintained corporations simply have more money than they know what to do with in the current economic climate.
"They not doing anything with it other than buying government bonds, which is why interest rates are so low," he said, adding it's a worldwide problem. "These corporations are sitting on massive piles of cash and they don't know what to do with it."
