The B.C. Coroners Service has called for an inquest into the death of Greg Matters in an RCMP shooting last year.

Matters, 40, died after he was shot by police near his family's home in Pineview after a lengthy standoff. A veteran of the Canadian military, Matters had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder at the time of his death.

The public inquest is scheduled for Oct. 7-11 at the Prince George courthouse. Chico Newell will be the presiding coroner and he, along with a jury, will hear evidence.

A coroner's inquest is not allowed to find anyone legally culpable for an incident, but they can make recommendations to try to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The provincial Independent Investigations Office looked into the incident and found no basis for any criminal charges to be laid.
