Cops for Cancer Tour de North is ready to hit the roads this year, but with a few adjustments because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bike tour that sees law enforcement and emergency service personnel cycle across regions to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society in funding childhood cancer research is still scheduled to take place in mid-September.

For the first time, the north's circuit will cover three routes:

  • Prince Rupert to Prince George
  • Fort St. John to Prince George
  • Williams Lake to Prince George

The tour will be done in a relay-style that engages riders from communities throughout northern B.C. and a goal of reaching Prince George by Sept. 18 with a tour of the city, including ride-bys at local schools.

“We are thrilled and so thankful that our volunteer committee created a tour that has adapted to the changes we have seen in 2020 and is still set to roll Sept. 14 to 18,” said Aimee Cassie, Tour de North Supporter Engagement Manager, in a release.

“This new model has team members riding from their home community to the following community, with a few riding multiple legs. We are actually covering all of our past routes, expanding the reach of the Cops for Cancer program, which raises money for pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes.”

Camp Goodtimes is a summer camp at Loon Lake in Maple Ridge that provides a unique summer experience for children and teens affected by cancer and their families

This year, the team is 37 members strong, including both alumni and new members, and organizers hope to see the program grow under this new model.

Tour will consist of the following:

  • Day 1 Sept. 14
    • West Route - Prince Rupert to Terrace (144 km)
    • North Route - Fort St John to Dawson Creek (75 km)
  • Day 2 Sept. 15
    • West Route - Houston to New Hazleton (130 km)
    • North Route - Dawson Creek to Chetwynd (100 km)

Childhood cancer is the number one cause of disease-related death in Canadian children under the age of 15 years, and two out of three childhood cancer survivors suffer long-term side effects from their treatment.

The Canadian Cancer Society is taking action against childhood cancer by funding high-quality pediatric cancer research and providing information and support to those families living with pediatric cancer.
