The provincial government gave the College of New Caledonia $330,496 to reduce wait times in four of its trades programs.

The funding translates to 64 trades seats evenly distributed between four programs: electrical, millwright, and third- and fourth-year power engineering.

Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond said Monday's announcement means British Columbians will develop the necessary skills in a "rapidly-changing labour market."

"By providing 64 critical trade seats at CNC, we continue to align skills training with future labour market demands," said Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, in the statement. "In doing so, we will help ensure British Columbians are first in line for the one million job openings expected by 2022, two-thirds which are a result of an aging demographic and the remaining one-third will be from anticipated economic growth."

CNC's allotment was part of $6.1 million set aside this year to fund 1,429 "critical trade seats" in 14 public post-secondary institutions throughout the province.
