Prospective students and families invited to check out college campuses

The choice to attend college is big step for new students and the College of New Caledonia is putting on an open house event to help them make that adjustment.

Starting Wednesday at its Fort St. James campus, CNC will host open-house activities at each of its six campuses in north central B.C.

Open to prospective students and their families, the aim is to familiarize open-house attendees with campus facilities and introduce the support programs in place for students, including academic advising, accessibility supports, financial aid, student housing, admissions, and resources/liaison for Indigenous students, student housing and admissions.

“It’s very beneficial for students to learn what supports are available as early as possible,” said Shelley Carter-Rose, CNC’s vice president of student affairs. “The transition into post-secondary requires some navigation and planning, but CNC’s network of supports can alleviate some of that stress. Learning about those services ahead of time can give students and their families a roadmap to follow and peace of mind.”

Faculty members will be on hand to answer questions and meet with students.

Students who attend will have their application fee waived and will be entered in a draw for one of three $1,000 tuition vouchers. One lucky visitor who registers online for the open house before next Wednesday will be selected for a $500 tuition credit, but advance registration is not required.

“We can’t wait to welcome community members to all our campuses,” said Carter-Rose. “No matter where you are in the application process, attending an open house is a great way to create an initial connection and sense of belonging with the campus and faculty.”

CNC offers more than 90 programs to prepare students for future jobs. The 2022 BC Labour Market Outlook estimates there will be a more than million job openings in the province in the next decade and 80 per cent of those jobs will require post-secondary training.

“Post-secondary education sets students up for a brighter future and lasting careers,” said CNC president and CEO, Dr. Dennis Johnson. “Through the open houses across the region we serve, we hope to help students feel confident in choosing CNC, or that we introduce them to exciting opportunities that will forge their path to lifelong learning.”
