More than 1,300 people participated in last year's 24-Hour Relay for Life in Prince George for the Canadian Cancer Society and 20 made it through the entire walk.
This year two of the 24-hour participants are Grade 11 students in College Heights secondary school's leadership class that will take the challenge May 7 and 8 at Masich Place.
Reid Power and Damara Collister decided to make the trek together.
"I think it's a really good cause to raise awareness in the community and within our school and I thought it would be a fun thing for Damara and I to do together," said Power, who's participated in the walk before but not walked for the full 24 hours.
Collister said she is walking in honour of her cancer survivor grandmother and both the girls would like to raise about $300 for the cause.
Daniel O'Reilly and Brett Gandy, Grade 11 students, are the organizers of the activities at College Heights secondary for the Relay for Life.
There are students who want to walk for a short time and there are others who wish only to raise funds, while other students will be volunteering to provide entertainment for children during daytime hours at the walk on May 7, said O'Reilly.
"I've had family members who have suffered from cancer in the past and so I thought it would be a really good thing for me to organize it and try to help out as much as possible because it means a lot to me," said O'Reilly.
Gandy has known people who have suffered from cancer as well.
"I've always had a passion to help find a cure for cancer," said Gandy.
"I felt my impact could be greatest by helping organize events for our school."
College Heights secondary will have a tent at the Relay for Life and leadership students will be at the ready to help fellow students during the 24-hour walk.
Grade 11 student Lila Mansour will take on the youth activities project at the event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and free play activities from 7 to 9 p.m. which will take between 30 and 50 volunteers to run the whole day.
Children can play tag, soccer, tug of war and participate in foot races while more sedate activities like face painting will take place inside the tent.
