CNC trades program for high school students expanded

High school students looking to get a jump on careers in the trades through CNC will have a broader range of vocations to choose from.

High school students looking to get a jump on careers in the trades through CNC will have a broader range of vocations to choose from.

Seats in the college's power engineering program have been added under a revamped agreement signed with School District 57 that allows highs school students to take classes at the college's career technical centre while also completing high school.

CNC's heavy duty mechanic-commercial transport foundation program will continue as a dual-credential, 40 week cohort program of 16 high school students, CNC and the school district said in a media release issued Friday.

Including power engineering, eight other programs will be offered in a blended model with adult programs. They include electrical foundation carpentry foundation, automotive service foundation, professional cook levels one and two, plumbing foundation, industrial mechanic-machinist foundation and welding foundation.

"The blended models were necessary to ensure the trades classes are fully subscribed moving forward," CNC academic vice-president Bryn Kulmatycki. "Neither institution can afford to subsidize undersubscribed programs, so this new relationship ensures trades classes will have the best chance of being filled in the future."
