College of New Caledonia trade students and instructors have refurbished more than 160 flag poles commemorating Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan ahead of Remembrance Day.
The wooden poles, which needed work due to the area where they were stored, were replaced with aluminum.
"Every time these flags fly, students can take pride knowing they lent a hand crafting this legacy project," Tara Szerencsi, CNC vice president for finance and corporate services, said.
The flags were first created by the family of Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick, who died in March 2010 at age 21 from injuries suffered in a bomb blast. He was the first from Prince George to have paid the ultimate sacrifice during the war in Afghanistan.
Attached to each pole is a wooden plaque commemorating the name and rank of a soldier. Flags flying for British Columbia's fallen soldiers will feature a special red base. All 160 flags will line the parade route on Remembrance Day.
The Independent Contractors and Business Association gathered funding for the project.
