The College of New Caledonia is teaming up with the Prince George African Heritage Society to present a series of events to celebrate the 16th annual Black History Month in February.
"Black History Month celebrates the diverse roots of the nation and country we call Canada," said George Kaweesi, Black History Month organizer and CNC instructor. "These events remind everyone that our community is made up of those from near and far and they share a common goal of trying to make it better."
The celebration begins with the Main Event, with a dinner, song and dance, several cooking demonstrations and Family Day to bring the community together for a big party.
"These events also serve as a reminder that people of African heritage have made some significant contributions to this community," said Kaweesi. "That we appreciate it and that we should all learn to work together to build a better society."
Schedule of Events
Main Event takes place Saturday, Feb. 9 at the CNC Cafeteria and Atrium with dinner from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., entertainment from 7:45 to 9:30 p.m., including performances by Cliff Raphael, Umoja and Transfiguration Good News Band. Then the dance will go from 9:30 p.m. to midnight with dance performances by Caribbean Connection Dance Group. Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for children six to 12, and children under five are free. Tickets are at Books & Co., 1685 Third Avenue, CNC Bookstore and UNBC Bookstore.

Family Day will be held Sunday, Feb. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the CNC cafeteria, with face painting, story-telling, games, drumming lessons featuring instructor Granville Johnson, and dancing lessons.
