City's unemployment rate down to 4.2 per cent

The city's unemployment rate stood at 4.2 per cent last month, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday, a marked decline from 6.8 per cent seen over the same month last year.

If there is a concern, it's that at 46,600, there are 2,900 fewer people in Prince George holding down jobs and the number of people of working age has dropped by 4,400 to 48,800.

The number of unemployed actively looking for work was 2,200, compared to 3,600 for the same month last year.

Month-over-month the unemployment rate declined 0.4 percentage points from April as the number of people working grew by 600. The number unemployed but seeking work held steady at 2,200 and those of working age not participating declined by 600.
