The city ended the year with a significantly-lower unemployment rate than 12 months before, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers issued Friday.
As of the end of 2017, it stood at 5.9 per cent, compared to 7.1 per cent by the end of 2016.
In all, 49,600 people were holding down jobs in December, an increase of 2,300. Moreover, the number of people of working age living in the city stood at 52,700, up by 1,900.
The number of people looking for work was 3,100, down by 500 from the year before, while the number of people of working age not participating in the workforce stood at 19,800, down from 21,400 in December 2016.
In November, the unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent with 49,800 working and 2,800 looking for work.
The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate full-time from part-time employment.
