Prince George's centennial year calendar has another addition after the North Central Local Government Association board decided to hold its 2015 annual general meeting in the city.
The bid was presented to the board by NCLGA director and Prince George Coun. Dave Wilbur.
"This is a significant win for Prince George, and I have to take my hat off to the staff who helped prepared such a comprehensive and compelling case for holding the event here in 2015," said Wilbur.
The city beat out Prince Rupert and Terrace as possible locations for the meeting and joint convention. The three-day event was held in Quesnel this year and will take place in Fort. St. John May 7-9, 2014.
Conventions of this type not only boost the local economy, but also highlight the city's services and facilities, said Mayor Shari Green.
"Our staff and council work very hard to promote Prince George as a great place to do business and the NCLGA convention - along with the 2015 Games and our centennial celebrations - are a clear manifestation of these efforts," she added.
In addition to being a big year for Prince George, 2015 will also mark the 60th anniversary of the NCLGA, which covers cities, towns, aboriginal communities, villages and regional districts in the northern two-thirds of the province.
"Our AGM is an opportunity for politicians, administrative staff and other stakeholders throughout central and northern B.C. to convene and discuss our shared concerns and look at common opportunities," said NCLGA president and Fort. St. John Coun. Bruce Christensen. "Our annual gathering is one of the biggest of its kind in B.C., second only to [the Union of B.C. Municipalities'] convention."
