You've more than likely noticed several changes around the city when it comes to safety.
The City of Prince George has announced they're now working on the final road and sidewalk rehabilitation project that was scheduled for 2019.
Two years ago, city council voted to double the budget and sidewalk construction and rehabilitation from roughly $500,000 to $1 million each year.
The city says this year, crews finished seven sidewalk improvement projects spanning close to 1.5 km, including 326 metres of newly installed concrete sidewalk.
The largest sidewalk rehabilitation project was on the south side of Highland Drive, from Berwick to Glenngarry Road while two new sidewalks were added to 2nd Avenue from Ospika to Quinn Street and 22nd Ave. from Highway 97 to the entrance to the College of New Caledonia (CNC).
Other improvements of note include new enhanced sidewalks as part of the parkade and ParkHouse Condominium developments that are next to city hall.
There was rehabilitation and extension of a paved trail next to Connaught Hill from Patricia Boulevard, the widening of the sidewalk on the north side of 7th Avenue across from city hall, as well as the increased frontage of Veterans Plaza.
Crosswalk improvements included:
- Pedestrian-activated crosswalk systems with flashing beacons at the St. Lawrence Avenue and Southridge Avenue and 20th Ave. and Oak Street crosswalks
- A crosswalk at the Highland and Dundee Drive intersection
- A countdown pedestrian signal at Queensway and 5th Ave.
Road safety improvements
- The signalization of the Ospika Boulevard and 22nd Ave. intersection
- A 30km/h speed limit and parking restriction on Pidherny Road
- New advanced warning and chevron signs for road curves on Purdue Road E and on Old Summit Lake Road
- A “30km/h while Children on Roadway” speed limit on Kelly Road N
- Parking restrictions on Zral Road for Springwood Elementary to increase safety for students as they are dropped off
- An additional accessible “handicapped parking” stall and wheelchair ramp next to the Central Interior Health Society at George Street and 4th Ave.
- A wheelchair ramp at 20th Avenue and Oak Street
The city adds designs were recently finished which will upgrade several more crosswalks to further improve safety.
These projects are expected to begin in the spring of 2020.
- 15th Ave. at Irwin Street
- 15th Ave. at Ewert Street
- 15th Ave. at Alward Street
- 5th Ave. at Stuart Drive
- Queensway at Connaught Drive
This week, crews are rehabilitating the sidewalk on 3rd Avenue in front of the Native Friendship Centre. The operation is the last of a variety of City projects in 2019 aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and motorists. https://t.co/BjsPLoR1MK pic.twitter.com/ljKAjk7rpd
