The City of Prince George will be following the lead of the federal and provincial governments, and will be recognizing Sept. 19 as a day of mourning in honour of Queen Elizabeth's funeral.

City hall will be closed on Sept. 19 and most city employees will have the day off, a spokesperson for the city said in an email. However, some city services will continue to be offered.

Garbage pick-up will continue as normal on Monday.

Bookings at city arenas, Masich Place Stadium and the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre will be honoured. The city is asking any groups which intend to cancel their events booked for Sept. 19  to contact the city immediately to reschedule. Masich Place will be closed for public walking.

Sept. 19 was a scheduled non-instructional day for School District 57. Schools will be closed on Monday, according to an email sent to parents by School District 57 on Thursday, and the Indigenous Day of Learning non-instructional day planned for Sept. 19 will be rescheduled to a later date.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George's offices will be closed on Monday, a spokesperson for the district said in an email. But the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill and transfer stations operated by the regional district which are normally open on Mondays will still be open.

In an email, a spokesperson for UNBC confirmed Monday will be a non-instructional day, following a statement issued by Premier John Horgan on Tuesday afternoon. In an email, a spokesperson for the College of New Caledonia said that Monday will be a non-instructional day and college services which would normally be offered on a weekday will be closed.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Provincial Court of British Columbia announced all provincial courts in B.C. will be closed on Monday, including the Prince George Courthouse. All court proceedings which were scheduled for Sept. 19 will be adjourned and rescheduled.

Federal and provincial employees will have the day off, but Sept. 19 won't be a statutory holiday and private-sector employers will not be required to give employees the day off or pay overtime, Horgan said.
