As more and more people take to the great outdoors to try to combat the COVID-19 blues the City of Prince George has recently posted signs at parks and trails to let visitors know that even outdoors social distancing must be practiced.

Keep a distance of two metres (approx. six feet or the length of a hockey stick) between you and others.

For example, if you visit a city trail, space out or stack in front of each other along the trail.

Avoid large social gatherings or groupings.

Limit contact with people who are at risk (the elderly and people in poor health).

Stay home if you are not feeling well or recently travelled outside of Canada. If you are self-isolated, keep in touch with others through technology or find other virtual ways to keep busy and connected.

The city has also taken the following measures to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus:

* Closing civic facilities following the provincial government's recommendation to cancel all gatherings of 50 or more people.

* Increasing custodial staffing and sanitizing facilities in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) recommended protocols.

* Placing signs throughout facilities and parks/trails reminding patrons of the importance of physical distancing and following safe hygiene practices.

* Ensuring city cleaning products comply with WHO recommended standards.

* Instructing all staff to follow proper hand-washing techniques.

* Taking additional measures to encourage physical distancing practices in city hall such as posting floor markers and stanchions and installing plastic screens on public-facing stations.

* Activating the Emergency Operations Centre to manage on-going delivery of civic operations and services.

* Continuing with city council meetings and suspending certain committee meetings.

* Highlighting ways to pay utilities and tax bills remotely.

* Providing resources for businesses to access government assistance.

* Providing information on materials that should not be flushed into the sanitary sewer system.
