Warm winter clothing may make for a good last-minute Christmas gift as the weather is going to take a definite turn for the colder for until the middle of next week.
The relatively balmy -5 C accompanied by the sustained snowfall on Thursday was expected to give way to a high Friday of just -15 C, according to Environment Canada.
Add on the 30 km/h winds expected to swoop in from the north and that number will drop to -26 C with the windchill, posing a risk of frostbite. There is also a 60 per cent chance of flurries.
By Saturday, the pattern should settle in, with the wind subsiding and the snowfall stopping, but with highs to remain in the -15 C range through to at least Boxing Day.
Dress warmly and plug in those trucks and cars, Environment Canada meteorologist Jim Steele advised, but on the bright side the city won't be mired in post-snowfall slush it's experienced so far this winter because the temperature will remain low rather than rise.
The average temperature for this time of year is -5 C for a high and -12 C for a low.
"Needless to say, it'll be a chilly but white Christmas," Steele said.
Those traveling south for Christmas can expect snowfall, "probably right through Saturday," Steele said.
