The College of New Caledonia and a new childcare society have signed a five-year lease agreement for the centre, located on the Prince George campus.

The Caledonia Early Care and Learning Centre Society formed as an independent non-profit after the college cut the daycare from its budget in April to address a $2.8 million deficit.

Since then the college has been "assisting the society as it assumed operation of the centre," said Tuesday's announcement, adding the lease "should help solidify the sustainability of the child care centre."

"We have approved a five-year lease and we are delighted that our campus will continue to have accessible child care services available for CNC students, employees and the general public," said Henry Reiser, CNC's president in a statement.

The daycare was used as valuable learning tool for practicum students, said an Early Childhood Care instructor.

"The lab setting is fundamental in demonstrating the interconnectedness of theory and practice to learners," said Christine Jackson in the release. "So, we are very pleased with the outcome as it will benefit our students as well as the children of CNC students, employees, and the community."

The daycare had been a suggested cut the year before, too, but the board agreed to save it after staff presented several options to raise money. Some of those programs, like a proposed summer camp, never happened.
