Chief Lake Road opened after gas leak: report *update*

A natural gas leak closed Chief Lake Road Thursday evening. RCMP were notified of the gas leak at 5:45 p.m. and are assisting the Pilot Mountain Volunteer Fire Department with the scene.

A natural gas leak closed Chief Lake Road Thursday evening.

RCMP were notified of the gas leak at 5:45 p.m. and are assisting the Pilot Mountain Volunteer Fire Department with the scene. The fire department confirmed that the road was closed in both directions and that there was no detour available to bypass the scene. An emergency official at the scene said initial estimates put the road closure at 3 to 4 hours.

A FortisBC technician was on scene by 6:20 p.m. and was assessing the nature of the leak while a repair crew was en route.

UPDATE – As of 8:00 p.m. the gas leak was under control; however repairs were still ongoing, according to a FortisBC official. Chief Lake Road is still closed and crews do not know when it will be reopened.

UPDATE (9:00 p.m.) – A report from twitter user Brenda Christensen (@BJChristensen62) said that Chief Lake Road opened up to single-lane traffic at around 8:40 p.m.
