A man who was previously sentenced to jail time for a smash and grab at a Pine Centre Mall jewelry store is now facing charges from a 2012 home invasion.
Dillan Benjamin Ertmoed, 23, continues to remain in custody following his arrest in late November and faces seven counts related to the incident.
Another man, Dohn William Schmidt, 36, was sentenced in May 2013 to a further three years and eight months in jail after pleading guilty to three counts related to the matter.
A the time of Schmidt's sentencing, the court heard that during the early morning hours of Aug. 24, 2012, he and an unidentified accomplice broke into a South Ogilvie home with the intention of stealing guns and other items after they found out the homeowner would be out of town - but they didn't know the homeowner's 60-year-old mother also lived there.
She was tied up using tape the burglars found in the home and they proceeded to steal a number of firearms, including three semi-automatic handguns, as well as a 60-inch television, a Honda Civic and other items.
The woman, who was frightened by the ordeal but not physically harmed, freed herself soon after Schmidt and his partner left and called police from a neighbour's home. She was unable to identify the men who broke in and police found no forensic evidence.
The initial investigation into the home invasion stalled until police arrested suspects in a series of unrelated armed robberies in September 2012. One of those suspects told police they had stolen a firearm used in their crimes from Schmidt and provided information on where another one of the firearms Schmidt had acquired in the home invasion was located.
In February 2013, Ertmoed was sentenced to a further 586 days in jail plus two years probation for participating in the smash and grab. And in November 2012, Raymond Jarrod Constant Pruden-Collins, 22, was sentenced to three years for his role in that robbery and a concurrent five-year term for for the armed robberies of two Subway restaurants five days before the jewelry store heist. Ertmoed was not involved in those offences.
Ertmoed also now faces one count of theft $5,000 or under and three counts of breach of probation from a Jan. 24 incident.
