The family of a former superintendent of School District 57 will be holding a mass and celebration of his life later this month.

Philip John Redmond spent 35 years working in District 57 as a teacher and principal, as well as the district superintendent during the late 1990's. He passed away in February at the age of 76.

Redmond began his teaching career in Prince George after moving from Liverpool, U.K. in 1967. He first began as a teacher of music and physical education at Austin Road Elementary before moving on to become vice-principal of Highland Elementary in 1970. He then served as principal for Nukko Lake Elementary, South Fort George Elementary and Malaspina Elementary before beginning work with the school district in 1986.

Redmond served as the superintendent of District 57 from 1995-2001, and served in the same capacity for the Catholic Diocese of Prince George from 2002-2004. He later retired and moved to Agassiz.

The Redmond family has established a memorial scholarship in his name with the goal of encouraging and supporting students pursuing a career in teaching. Donations can be made by calling the School District 57's Reward office at (250) 561-6800 Ext. 314 or emailing [email protected] .

The memorial mass and celebration of life for Redmond will be held on Saturday, May 26th at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church at 3285 Cathedral Ave. The service will be followed by the celebration of life at the Columbus Community Centre at 7201 Domano Blvd from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
