Prince George's school district board of education (SD57) will be debating catchment and capacity recommended changes to Edgewood Elementary and Spruceland Traditional at next month’s meeting.

Last year, a report to SD57's Education Services Committee, issued by the Catchment and Capacity Review Stakeholder Advisory Committee, recommended moving Edgewood and Spruceland from the Duchess Park Family of Schools to the D.P. Todd Family of Schools.

This would mean Grade 7 students leaving Edgewood Elementary and Spruceland Traditional Elementary in June 2020 would attend secondary school at D.P. Todd instead of Duchess Park in September 2020.

The Education Services Committee supported the recommendation and it has been accepted by the Board of Education.

The change has been recommended as a solution to overpopulation at Duchess Park, a triple-track secondary school hosting English, Francophone and French-immersion programming.

“This is to notify the public that in our October board meeting we will be looking at recommendations from the catchment and capacity committee that were tabled June 2019 regarding Edgewood Elementary and Spruceland Traditional,” said Board Chair Tim Bennett at Tuesday night's (Sept. 24) board meeting, when the notice was announced.

The recommendations will be debated at the Oct. 29th board meeting.

Renovation of D.P. Todd Secondary, which would add 300 seats to the current 600, is also a top priority on SD57's five-year capital plan and the use of additional portables at D.P. Todd will be considered in the short-term.

Public information sessions were also held in June regarding the recommended changes to Edgewood and Spruceland, with members of the board in attendance.
