A teacher from Harwin Elementary School has won a national award.
“We are here tonight to recognize one of our teachers,” said School District No. 57 (SD57) Board Chair Tim Bennett at last night's (June 18) public meeting.
“We are very excited to recognize Ms. Trina Chivilo who is a teacher at Harwin who is the recipient of the CERA - Todd Rogers Research Award.”
The Todd Rogers Research Award is a national award given by the Canadian Education Researcher’s Association, which works to improve educational research in Canada.
Chivillo was unable to attend the award ceremony held earlier this month at the University of British Columbia (UBC), so the board of education congratulated her at their last public meeting of the school year.
“I think it’s wonderful that I get to do this,” said Assistant Superintendent Cindy Heitman. “I have known Trina for a very long time, in fact, we did our Masters together, and I had the privilege of working with her at Harwin so this makes it more special.”
The Todd Rogers Award is given to someone who facilitates the building of research networks to support a culture of evidence-informed student achievement improvement and who provides direct leadership and support to educators to enhance evidence-informed research in schools and classrooms.
“It gives me great honour, to give this research award to Ms. Chivilo,” said Heitman. “I’m really proud of the work she is doing in our district on behalf of education and community.”
