For the first time the Ride to Conquer Cancer is coming north to recruit participants.
The annual cycling trip from Vancouver to Seattle raises millions for the B.C. Cancer Foundation and had a decidedly northern flavour last year with the Wheelin' Warriors of the North team out of Prince George.
Ride to Conquer Cancer corporate and orientation specialist Ashleigh Schafer will visit Prince George this weekend, holding two sessions at UNBC to provide more information for people interesting in participating in the event.
"An orientation session often brings out new riders or people who aren't registered yet," she said.
"It goes over all of the logistic and event details and provides some tips for fundraising and as well as training to build up for the ride."
Schafer, who is combing the work trip with a family visit, is looking forward to answering questions about the two-day ride on June 14, 15. Last year the ride raised more than $10 million and attracted riders from all different age groups and backgrounds.
"A lot of people have hesitations to get involved with a cycling event, they might not feel as though they're a cyclist," she said. "But we've had people who have never ridden a bike before that get involved with the ride."
Last year Karin Piche created the Wheelin Warriors team, recruited more than 30 riders and raised close to $100,000. She'll be at the orientation sessions looking to find new team members for 2014.
Participants register for the ride individually, but can join teams to get extra support for training and fundraising.
The orientation sessions will be in room 6-390 at UNBC. The first one goes Saturday from 5 to 6 p.m. and the second one goes Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m.
