Buyer beware

Prince George RCMP sends a message to the public that they do not recommend any one home security company over another, so don't be fooled by any sales tactics.

"The RCMP does not lend or provide their name to any company, nor do they support the use of their name being used as a sales tactic," said RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith, media communications officer.

Police have received several calls regarding solicitations being made by security companies claiming the RCMP will respond only to alarms being monitored by a particular company.

"In reality the RCMP respond to many alarms from a variety of alarm companies," Smith said.

The public should know that the city bills a residence or business after two false alarms. The first two false alarms are dealt with by warning letters, the third false alarm comes with a $100 fine and and the fourth has a $150 fine attached. Any subsequent calls after the first four have a $200 fine each.

Any concerns by the public regarding any security alarm company should call the Better Business Bureau at 1-604-682-2711 and any concerns about door to door salesmen or phone solicitation is a `buyer beware' situation. Police only get involved if a criminal act occurs.
