A ban on open fires east of the Fraser River in the Cariboo Fire Centre has been rescinded.
However, anything large than a campfire remains prohibited west of the river, the provincial government said Tuesday.
East of the river, the public is now permitted to burn piles of woody debris, burn stubble or grass and use fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels. But they must have sufficient personnel, water and tools on hand to prevent the fire from escaping, and must comply with air quality control legislation.
Anyone lighting a category 3 open fire must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1
888 797-1717. A category 3 open fire is a fire that burns material in piles larger than two
metres high and three metres wide, or that burns stubble or grass over an area larger than 0.2
hectares.
