Building permits surge in August

Permits for nearly $12.1 million worth of work were taken out at city hall in August, more than double the totals seen for the same months in 2015 and 2016. At $6.3 million on 13 permits, new single-family homes led the way.

Permits for nearly $12.1 million worth of work were taken out at city hall in August, more than double the totals seen for the same months in 2015 and 2016.

At $6.3 million on 13 permits, new single-family homes led the way. In August 2016, 16 permits for $4.3 million worth of work on that front were issued. In Augustu 2015, the total was $3.9 million on 12 permits.

As well a permit for a $3.8-million foundation for the Aboriginal Housing Society's 27-unit seniors home at 1811 Spruce St. was issued.

Other significant permits were for a $673,008 duplex at 7654-7660 Creekside Way and for $200,000 worth of renovations at the Elders Community Recreation Association at 1692-10th Ave.

Year-to-date, the total stands at $85.8 million, compared to $96.2 by the same point last year and $64.4 million by the end of August 2015.
