Building a campfire in a heat wave

The risk of wildfire is expected to increase as higher temperatures and lower humidity contribute to dryer forest fuels.

Under new regulations announced July 1, campfires cannot be larger than a half-metre high by a half-metre wide. Fires larger than this can result in a $345 fine.

Campers must also create a one-metre area around their campfire that is free of combustible material, and have at least eight litres of water or a shovel nearby.

Ashes should be cold to touch before leaving an area. Smouldering ashes can re-ignite in warm daytime conditions, causing wildfires.

Anyone who causes a wildfire though arson or recklessness can be fined up to $1 million or spend three years in prison.

So far this season, crews in the Prince George Fire Centre have responded to 149 wildfires, of which 112 were human-caused.

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *5555 on your cellphone or toll free to 1 800 663-5555.
