Bruin bashing planned for today

For $5 a swing, fans of the Vancouver Canucks can take a bash at the Boston Bruins. For $50 or more, that swing of the sledgehammer can be used to break some glass on a car painted Bruin black and yellow.

For $50 or more, that swing of the sledgehammer can be used to break some glass on a car painted Bruin black and yellow.

People can make their choice today at the parking lot at Canadian Tire (5008 Domano Blvd.) as to how much they want to shell out to support the VMC Vision Management & Construction peewee Timberwolves drive to reach the provincial C softball championship.

The Bash the Bruinator fundraiser starts today at 10 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. Timberwolves co-coach Bill Ollinger hopes to raise at least $1,500, money that will be used to fund the T-wolves' trip to Cloverdale for the provincial tournament, July 23-26.

"We're trying to tap into the Canucks' playoff run and we'll be videotaping people who are going to take a smash at the Bruinator to help the Canucks win the Cup," said T-wolves co-coach Bill Ollinger.

"The Bruinator is the car we'll be painting in Bruins' colours, but we aren't using the logo. It just says the word 'Bruin', so the NHL copywrite police will have a tough time proving it, if they come looking for us."

The car, a mid-sized sedan, has been donated by A-Star Automotive Recyclers, while the sledgehammer and safety equipment will be supplied by Husky Energy. For those who prefer a lighter instrument of destruction, they can choose to use a metal baseball bat. Hot dogs and drinks will be available for purchase by donation.

"The car is in decent shape, but it won't be after everyone's done with it," said Ollinger. "We're asking for donations of $50 or more to take a swing at anything that has glass, just for the sound effect.

"I think it will be huge. We've got a Facebook page called Bash a Bruin and we're getting lots of interest through that. The videotape will go on YouTube."

The T-wolves team is made up of 12 players aged 12 to 14, at least eight of whom are first-year peewees. Roster players are: Dylan Savory, Danny Hansen, Austyn Boulding, Nick Olson, Brandon Hanson, Drayton Morin, Austyn Haugen, Spencer Dempsey, Trent Seymour, Brevin Nowoczin and Graham Walkey. Cody Boulding is the team's bat boy.

Last year in Whalley, the T-wolves won the provincial B peewee silver medal.

"We don't have much time to get ready for provincials, we'll just be playing midget girls and trying to get in games where we can," said Ollinger.

The other T-wolves coaches are Dean Tarasoff and Tarissa Boulding. Celeste Savory, a devout Canucks' fan, is the team manager.
