The Outdoor Ice Oval was a busy place in January and will host PG Skates Monday from 1 to 3 p.m., which is a free family skate.

During the Celebrate Prince George Winter Festival, Enhance PG offers residents the chance to enjoy a free family skate hosted by PG Skates at the Outdoor Ice Oval on Family Day Monday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Enhance PG has hosted these events for six years.

"As a committee we were discussing various ways of encouraging residents to take advantage of all the opportunities they have for outdoor recreation," said Betty Burbee, member of Enhance PG committee. "And it was my suggestion that we alert people to the outdoor ice skating facilities."

During the first year the PG Skates events were at the Outdoor Ice Oval, Westwood community oval, the Civic Centre Plaza rink and the Railway and Forestry Museum rink.

After that, the event was held solely at the Outdoor Ice Oval and their society co-hosts with Enhance PG.

"This year it's being held in conjunction with the winter festival," said Burbee. "We'll have goodie bags from Save On Foods, music and face painting and the Blizzards are going to do a speed-skating demonstration and, of course, it's free and there's hot chocolate."

The Brain Injured Group will be on hand during the PG Skates event and will be providing information to those interested.

"People are encouraged to wear their helmets," said Burbee.

There are no regular skate rentals but there are a limited number of speed skates available for rent so people might give it a try, added Burbee.

At the rink there are even chairs to push around for those who are not so steady on their skates. People of all ages use the chairs and it's acceptable practice to use them as needed.

"The Outdoor Ice Oval is an amazing facility and the volunteers there are so fabulous," said Burbee. "We owe so much appreciation to these volunteers who through good weather and bad weather provide every opportunity for a good venue where residents can skate."
