A northern resident will get a Governor General's Medal of Bravery today in Ottawa.
At a ceremony this morning in Rideau Hall, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston will present 39 federal citations for extraordinary acts of courage, and one of the recipients is James Joseph Bourgeois of Prince Rupert.
On March 26, 2009, Bourgeois looked in his rearview mirror and saw a panicked woman pursuing his vehicle. When he stopped, allowing the woman to get inside, he saw a man armed with a semiautomatic handgun, who tried to pull the woman out of the car. The man tried to shoot her, but his gun misfired. Bourgeois sped away and told the woman to stay down as they drove to the police station.
