The Prince George Pineview Second Blackpine Scout Group will hold their 30-year reunion and open house on April 30.

All former Scouting members in the Pineview and Blackburn areas are encouraged to reunite at the event featuring family games, campfire, stories and pictures from the past and a cake cutting ceremony.

Gary McLeod, former cub and scout, said his early years in scouting forged lifetime friendships and taught him useful skills like compass work, knot tying and doing good deeds which he continues to utilize as an adult, father and part-time cub leader.

"Now as a parent of four kids I want them to experience the same camaraderie that I did as a youth," said McLeod, who encourages all parents to explore what scouting may have to offer both children and adult leaders.

In the meantime, this week marks the birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, founders of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements. And a highlight of the week is Thinking Day on Feb. 22 when the 10 million members of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 144 countries around the world put special emphasis on international friendship.

In keeping with the tradition, many members of the programs will be seen wearing their uniforms to school and work during the special week.

The Scouts and Guides organizations came to Canada in 1908 and 1910, respectively.

Girl Guides of Canada is the largest Canadian organization for girls and women, with more than 100,000 members, while Scouts Canada offers outdoor adventure activities for more than 75,000 boys and girls. Dedicated volunteer leaders number 23,000.

Across Canada the Feb. 20 to 26 week of celebrations will include camps, expeditions, banquets and parades as well as recognition events.
