The London Hotel was the scene of another fire early Friday morning.

Firefighters from three halls were called to the 1475 Third Ave. location at 2:15 a.m. to find a fire on the ground floor at the rear of the building.

They mounted an interior attack and quickly knocked down the main body of the fire but the three-storey building's balloon-style construction allowed the blaze to get into roof and firefighters from a fourth hall were called in to help extinguish the hot spots, Prince George Fire Rescue chief John Lane said.

It was the second fire to break out at the London Hotel in less than four days and its cause appears to be suspicious, Lane said. Investigators were on the scene later Friday morning.

There were no tenants in the building due to the previous fire on Monday evening, which was quickly extinguished. But the two street-level businesses at the London were closed Friday and the smell of smoke from the blaze hung over the 1400 block of Third.

The London has been a trouble spot at other times.

In May, Prince George RCMP made some drug-related arrests and, in late June, Jared Blake Switzer, 28, was sentenced to 117 days in jail and one year probation for possession for the purpose of trafficking as a result.

Police called the London Hotel a "notorious location for crime in the downtown core" at the time of the arrests and added it has been the subject of more than 150 police files since the fall of 2008.
