A seven-kilometre section of the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park has reopened to hikers.
The trial was damaged by flooding in 2021. For the 2023 season, most of the 23 km trail will remain closed for repairs. The 7 km section up to the Kinney Lake Campground is now open for day hikes and overnight stays at 18 backcountry campsites. The camp sites must be reserved in advance.
"BC Parks has been working hard to reopen the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park since the 2021 heat dome, rapid snowmelt and excessive rain caused substantial damage to large sections of the trail," B.C. Environment Minister George Heyman said. "We know people care deeply about provincial parks and want them stewarded effectively. That's why we're focused on building back in a climate-resilient, sustainable manner to ensure inspiring natural spaces, like Mount Robson Park, will be accessible for people to visit and enjoy for many years to come."
Phase 2 of the trail repair, the four-kilometre section from Kinney Lake to Whitehorn Campground, is expected to be completed in 2024. The final phase of the project, from Whitehorn Campground to Berg Lake, is slated to reopen in 2025.
Mount Robson Provincial Park is located northeast of Valemount. During peak season, up to 1,000 people hike the trail per day. Almost 100 additional parking spaces, including six accessible parking spaces, have been added to the trailhead parking lot.
