Now that wildfire season is gone it's time to look in your own yard to be fire smart during the fall and winter months.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George offers some FireSmart principles for homeowners to keep their properties safe by reducing the risk.
Rake and clean up dry leaves, tree needles and branches that could be ignited by fire.
Clear out all corners and crevices around the home, attached garage, deck and patio including gutters and roof.
Woodpiles should be stored away from the house and it's recommended to store firewood at least 10 metres away. Same goes for backyard fire pits. They should be as far away from any structures or trees as possible.
A three-metre area surrounding an active fire should be free from combustible material and make sure there is proper ventilation in a burn barrel and a six-millimetre wire mesh screen is recommended.
