Everyone's invited to feel like a rock star while shooting a TV commercial for Summerfest next Wednesday night.
Lisa Cassidy of Be Unique Fitness is organizing an interactive groove walk down a closed section of Third Avenue, between Brunswick and Quebec, which will start at 6 p.m.
Filmed by CKPG to promote the Downtown Business Improvement Association's festival August 19, the scene will be that of a crowd on its way to Summmerfest, Pied Piper style, where people on the sidewalks just can't resist joining in the fun.
"I've started doing a lot of community projects and one of the things I do is groove that consists of simplistic, easy dance moves that can be done anywhere," she said. "So the Downtown Business Improvement Association organizers and I were talking about the possibility of a flash mob for Summerfest."
Because people can sometimes be intimidated by the word flash mob, as there's a lot of choreography involved, they decided to do an interactive groove flash mob instead, said Cassidy.
"So, I will be teaching people moves right on the spot if they want something to copy, but they can dance along on their own, too," she said.
After viewing Ben Aron's YouTube video about dance walking, Cassidy started a dance walking club that meets every Monday night at Fort George Park.
It's been a lot of fun, she said, and that's what started the Summerfest commercial idea.
"So for the commercial itself, we decided it should have that same kind of vibe, and we're all dance walking our way to Summerfest," said Cassidy. "We're looking for as many people as we can to participate in this because it's really great to have as many community groups and as much diversity present as possible so it really represents the community of Prince George."
Residents can walk, dance, or be bystanders on the sidewalk watching the action, waving to the dancers, Cassidy added.
"So we're really opening up the possibility for people to be able to participate in this commercial and so I wanted to really alleviate the stress of people thinking that if they do this they have to dance and that's not the case," said Cassidy. "Just as Summerfest represents the community as a whole, so will the commercial."
