B.C. sees 58 new COVID-19 cases, one positive in Northern Health

Another record has been set for B.C.'s COVID-19 situation as the curve continues to go upward.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, alongside Minister of Health Adrian Dix, announced today (Aug. 25) there have been 58 new COVID-19 cases discovered throughout B.C. in the past 24 hours bringing the overall total to 5,242.

Among the new cases, Northern Health added one more for a new recorded total of 128 since the pandemic reached the region in March.

B.C.'s new active-case record now stands at 925 cases across the province.

This includes 22 in hospital and seven in ICU. There have been 4,114 people that have fully recovered. 

Nobody has died in the last 24 hours from the virus and the fatality rate remains at 203.

“While we would all like to get to zero, we need to rather focus on prevention, detection and rapid response," said Dr. Henry and Minister Dix in a joint statement.

“Living with COVID-19 in our communities also means being unrelenting in our commitment to support and care for each other; to reach out to our vulnerable neighbours, friends and family members."

Currently, there are 1,683 people under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.

The breakdown of all COVID-19 infections in the province by region is 2,762 in Fraser Health, 1,683 in Vancouver Coastal, 425 in Interior Health and 168 on the island.

“We know that COVID-19 is going to be with us for many months to come," Dr. Henry and Dix added.

"As a result, unlike other viruses that have a vaccine, our focus is to keep new cases low and slow, and quickly contain new outbreaks as they occur.

“Our recent daily cases are higher than many of us are comfortable with, so let’s continue to do our part every moment of every day and keep COVID-19 where it needs to be."
