Prospective snowmobile thiefs beware - bait sleds are everywhere.

That's the warning from the B.C. RCMP and the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team.

Just like the bait cars, the bait snowmobiles are equipped with technology that allows police to track the stolen sled and apprehend the thief.

That said, snowmobile owners are advised to take precautions to prevent their machines from being stolen:

- Park your vehicles in well-lit areas with good visibility and lots of pedestrian traffic

- Mark your sleds with an identification number

- Invest in anti-theft devices for both your tow vehicle and snowmobile

- Record all identifying information on your equipment including sleds, trucks and trailers and keep it separate from your machines

- Securely lock all of your equipment

Proper documentation can help any sled owner, especially when it comes to returning recovered property that had been stolen.

All snowmobile owners now can register their machines through their insurance broker and the step becomes mandatory on June 1 for riding on Crown land. Auto insurance is also required if operating on a highway.
