During the Family Day long weekend people are encouraged to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count all around the world, including in Prince George.

If you’re looking for something to do this Family Day long weekend that’s a bit different, join bird enthusiasts around the globe for the Great Backyard Bird Count from Friday through Monday.

Bird and nature lovers everywhere come together in the effort to count as many of the world’s bird species as possible over these four days.

Similar to Project FeederWatch, this bird count helps scientists learn about the distribution and abundance of birds.

During the bird count, participants report the number of our fine feathered friends of each species seen during a single counting session and submit the numbers using eBird Mobile or ebird.org.

People can also count in more than one location. Just submit a separate checklist for each location each time. Report the same birds that are reported to Project FeederWatch as well as any other birds seen, even those birds flying overhead count during this event.

People can also share the bird species seen using the Merlin Bird ID app.

There was about 385,000 people worldwide who participated during last year's event and the result was more than 7,000 species from 192 countries reported. Combined with other bird counts, the results help create a more clear picture of how birds are faring, whether individual species are declining, increasing, or holding steady in the face of habitat loss, climate change, and other threats.
