A Prince George man has been sentenced to seven years in jail for maintaining a seven-year sexual relationship with a boy he had he first encountered while babysitting.

Walter Ceal, 42, appeared emotionless as Supreme Court Justice John Truscott gave his decision at the Prince George courthouse on Friday.

The court found Ceal, who was found guilty in June following a trial by judge alone, began a sexual relationship with the boy in August 2000 when he was just nine years old and continued the affair until the he was 16.

Matters came to a head when in 2007 the boy tried to commit suicide and was admitted to a psychiatric unit for assessment. At first, he made no mention of the relationship but eventually began to speak of having sex with Ceal.
