Baby registration goes online

New parents will have one fewer chore to fit in between all the late-night feedings and countless diaper changes.

New parents will have one fewer chore to fit in between all the late-night feedings and countless diaper changes.

The provincial government is launching a new electronic baby registration system on Wednesday, which will cut down on the amount of paperwork parents need to complete.

Parents will have the option of registering their child online, a process the government expects will take about 20 minutes. In order to complete the process parents will need to have the mother's personal health number handy as well as the location and date of the baby's birth.

All of the approximately 44,000 babies born in B.C. every year must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency and the process is free if completed within 30 days of birth.

The online application is available on the agency's website at www.vs.gov.bc.ca

Parents without access to a computer, or those who enjoy the pen-and-paper method, will still be able to fill out hard copies of the required forms.
