An announcement on the future of Babine Forest Products, the Burns Lake mill destroyed in an explosion on Jan. 20, is set for today.

The B.C. government has scheduled a press conference featuring Hampton Affiliates, the Oregon-based firm with a 90 per cent stake in the mill, for this morning. Also in attendance will be Jobs Minister Pat Bell and area MLA John Rustad.

One of the key issues surrounding the blast was whether Hampton will rebuild the facility, which employed 250 in the northern B.C. community 226 kilometres west of Prince George. Bell has said the firm has told him the amount of available timber in the area would factor into any decision to rebuild Babine.

Two workers, Robert Luggi, 45, and Carl Charlie, 42, died in the explosion.
