Quesnel RCMP on the lookout for a man suspected of trying to abduct an 11-year-old boy on Monday evening.

Police said the incident occurred at about 7 p.m. as the boy was walking with his family on the trail between the Quesnel River Bridge and the Lebourdais Park ball diamond in the community 116 kilometres south of Prince George.

"When the boy stopped to rest, and his family continued to walk forward, a man ran at the boy and grabbed him around the neck," police said. "As the boy was being dragged from behind, he was able to fight off his attacker and run to the safety of his family."

Police said the man fled on foot toward Shepherd Avenue and Murphy Street and noted it occurred in an area close to a playground, recreation center, and ball park, where young children and families frequent seven days a week.

"We recommend all parents to have a talk with their children about safety plans, awareness, and what to do if approached by a stranger," RCMP said.

Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect. He is described as about 5'9 tall, and skinny and wearing a ski mask, blue hoody, white shirt, jeans, and sneakers at the time.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured an image of the man on a dash cam or home surveillance system is asked to contact the detachment at 250-992-9211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
