Prince George's two amateur hockey organizations will be petitioning the city to build a new hockey arena to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games, rather than renovating the Kin Centre.
The Prince George Minor Hockey Association and Prince George Recreational Hockey League will make the case that a new arena, in addition to the Kin Centre, would provide a legacy of the games for the city.
Construction of a new facility would reduce or eliminate downtown at the Kin Centre and provide a superior venue for the Canada Winter Games, according to the groups' report.
Also on the agenda is the Pine Centre Neighbourhood Plan. The plan details future use for the current Prince George Golf and Curling Club lands and adjacent areas.
Council will be asked to endorse a 1.64 ha no-development zone on the corner of Highway 16 and Highway 97. The area includes the site of the Prince George Playhouse and its parking lot. The no development zone would prohibit additional development in the area, but not restrict use of the playhouse.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service will also be making a presentation to city council requesting a bylaw to force property owners to follow bear-safe practices.
The proposed bylaw would require home owners to remove fruit from on and around trees; store garbage and other bear attractants in enclosed structures; not place garbage cans on the curb before 4 a.m.; and not place bird feeders where bears can get at them.
Bear complaints have been on the rise in Prince George since 2008.
Between April and December last year, conservation officers destroyed 86 black bears and one grizzly bear. During the same period, the conservation service received 1,925 calls about bears.
Between April 2008 and December, 2010 conservation officers destroyed 161 black bears and 13 grizzly bears in Prince George.
