A former Prince George man's attempt to appeal his sentence for sexually interfering with a seven-year-old girl has been dismissed by the B.C. Court of Appeals.

Rui Louis Ventura Araujo, 49, was sentenced in September 2013 to 18 months in jail followed by three years probation for the July 2012 incident at a Prince George home.

An appeal was filed in January but Araujo left no forwarding address following his deportation to Portugal arising from an earlier conviction for the same offence and his lawyer withdrew from the case in April.

According to a Court of Appeals reasons for judgment, it appears that Araujo's brother had been acting as his liaison with the RCMP and immigration authorities but there has been no further communication that Araujo intends to proceed with the appeal.

Consequently, the appeal was dismissed Nov. 24 for want of prosecution.
