It's more tough news when it comes to unemployment in Prince George.

According to StatsCanada's Labour Force Survey for December, Prince George came in at 6.7 per cent for its unemployment rate compared to 5.9 per cent the previous month in November.

Provincially, B.C. saw an increase from 4.4 in November to 4.8 per cent last month.

Despite the increase, the province still holds the lowest unemployment rate in the country.

Canada recorded a drop last month in its unemployment rate, going from 5.6 per cent down to 5.3 because of a 35,000-employee increase.

Statistics Canada says employment saw increases in accommodation and food services and in construction, while it was little changed in the other industries.

From December 2018 to December 2019, employment in Canada increased by 320,000 jobs (1.7 per cent).

During 2019, the unemployment rate declined to 5.4 per cent in May, which Stats Canada said was a record low since comparable data became available in January 1976.

At the end of last year, the rate was 5.6 per cent, the same as in December 2018.
