Alberta man killed in weekend avalanche

A 28-year-old Alberta man has been identified as the person who died in the avalanche near Valemount over the weekend, the B.C. Coroners Service said Monday.

Kym Alvin Avery Wilson, from Warburg, was snowmobiling with four others at Goat Ridge in the Clemina area about 30 kilometres south of Valemount on Saturday when he was swept up in an avalanche on Goat Ridge.

Valemount RCMP received information of several SPOT distress beacons along with GPS coordinates being activated shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Wilson's body was found in about a metre of snow several hours after the event and his body was recovered the next day after the the area's safety from further avalanches was ensured.

It is the first avalanche fatality in this area of the province this winter and came two days after the Canadian Avalanche Centre issued a special warning urging extra caution for those out in the backcountry.

Wilson's hometown is located about 60 km west of Leduc in central Alberta.
