Some preperatory work on the Salmon River bridge began Monday and will continue for the next six days.
A crew is doing geotechnical work in the area, a Ministry of Transportation spokesperson said, in advance of replacing the 61-year-old bridge with a new one.
For drivers, it means Highway 97 is reduced to single lane alternating at the spot from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through to the end of Saturday.
The actual construction will occur in late 2016. The new bridge will be wider and have a greater capacity to handle oversize loads.
It will also have a dedicated sidewalk and pedestrian underpasses at both ends of the bridge, as well as safe off-highway parking for recreational
users of the Salmon River, according to the Ministry of Transportation.
In all, $24 million has been budgeted for the project.
