Active cases of COVID-19 are showing a significant drop in Northern Health.

As of Tuesday, the count stood at 1,316, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control, well down from 1,566 on Monday.

Hospitalizations are also down, as they declined to 26 from 33 the day before. As well, the number of those patients in critical care stood at seven, compared to 11 the day before.

However, 217 new cases were reported, making it the 13 day this month in which there were more than 200 new cases. January 12 remained the day with the largest number at 299.

Meanwhile, the province is extending its vaccine certificate program through to June 30 but is leaving the door open to making “adjustments” if the COVID-19 situation improves before then.

The B.C. vaccine card program was due to expire Jan. 31 and was widely expected to be extended after provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said repeatedly since December an extension was under consideration.

“If we are in a better place before June 30, however, we will look to make adjustments,” she said.

Adjusted for age, there were 148.8 hospitalizations per 100,000 people in B.C. over two weeks ending January 23, with not vaccinated people accounting for 71, partially vaccinated for 40.9 and fully vaccinated for 16.9, according to figures from the Ministry of Health.
