Active COVID-19 cases continue to climb in Northern Health

Following the province-wide trend, the number of COVID-19 cases in Northern Health continues to climb upwards as we head into the fall.

Yesterday, the region reached its highest peak since last April with more than 200 active cases reported. That number continues to grow, as there are 36 new cases today (Aug.18) and now 230 active cases in the region.

There are two more people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Northern Health for a total of four, and all four are listed in intensive care, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

There was also a second outbreak reported at Site C where there have been 41-lab confirmed cases and “several active clusters of COVID-19 amongst primarily unvaccinated workers,” according to Northern Health.

Thirty-two cases are active, and more than 110 close contacts are in self-isolation at the work camp or in their home communities, the health authority said.

Province-wide, B.C. is reporting 553 new cases of COVID-19, including one epi-linked case, for a total of 157,567 cases in the province.

There are currently 5,580 active cases of COVID-19 throughout B.C., and 3,203 of those are in the Interior Health region.

Of the active cases, 107 individuals are in hospital and 53 are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

In the past 24 hours, there has been one new death in Fraser Health, for an overall total of 1,782.

Since December 2020, the Province has administered 7,265,222 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.
