COVID-19 cases in northern B.C. hit highest level since spring

There were more than 200 active coronavirus cases in the Northern Health region on Tuesday for the first time since the end of April

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Northern Health region rose above 200 on Tuesday, reaching their highest level since late April.

A total of 35 new cases were reported in northern B.C. on Tuesday, according to data released by the B.C. Ministry of Health. The number of active cases rose to 206, up from 197 cases on Monday.

The number of active cases in the Northern Health region has nearly doubled in a week, going from 111 on Aug. 10 to 206 on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, there were two people hospitalized in the region with COVID-19, both listed in intensive care, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

A total of 501 new cases reported province-wide on Tuesday, and the number of active cases in B.C. rose to 5,296. Across the province, 111 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, with 51 of those in intensive care.

One new COVID-related death was reported in B.C. on Vancouver Island on Tuesday, bringing the province’s death toll from the pandemic to 1,781 – including 159 residents of the Northern Health region.

As of Tuesday, 82.7 per cent of eligible British Columbians (ages 12 and up) had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 73.5 per cent were fully vaccinated.

Nearly 7.25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province, including 313,504 in the Northern Health region.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 157,014 cases of COVID-19 in B.C., including 8,163 in the Northern Health region.
